Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Strömberg Wortstudien 30f. thinks it comes from ἀργός `brilliant white' (cf. ἄργεμον, ἀργεμώνη) because of the colour, of which we know nothing, however. DELG adds "Pourrait ětre aussi `plante qui efface les taches blanches sur les yeux'(?)", which is ununderstandable to me.
